Why Rest Matters: Unplugging, Reconnecting, and Remembering God’s Beauty
Most of our days were wonderfully simple.
Breakfast in the open air while bright trupial birds hopped around the tables.
Long hours in the water.
Sunset dinners that slowed our conversations down.
Quiet walks through Oranjestad, exploring markets and sharing stories.
Snorkeling a shipwreck and watching sea turtles move with a grace that almost seemed holy.
Standing by the natural bridge in the national park and feeling how small we are and how big God is.
There is something about unplugging from the routine that allows you to hear God more clearly. When you rest, you start to notice the small things again. The sound of waves. The taste of a meal. The laugh of someone you love. Even the wind feels like a reminder that God is near.
Marriage needs that kind of time.
Not the busy time.
Not the “let’s squeeze this in” time.
But the slow time. The grateful time. The time where you can look at each other and remember that God brought you together and that your relationship needs care, attention, and joy.
Being away reminded me that God created rest as a gift. It is not a retreat from responsibility. It is preparation for faithfulness. It is space for your soul to breathe so you can return ready to love, serve, and lead well.
I hope you also create space to rest.
Take time with your spouse.
Step outside and enjoy creation.
Let God remind you of His goodness through the simple beauty He has made.
Kristie and I came home thankful. Thankful for each other. Thankful for God’s creation. Thankful for the gift of rest. And thankful for a church family that understands how important it is to slow down and reconnect.
