Our Journey

Lake Lynn Baptist Church was founded as Community Baptist Church in 1952 from the dreams of a small group of believers who heard God’s call to establish a church between Sandy Run and Big Rockfish Creek. The church was first housed in a building that had formerly been a store. The building was located beside US 301 just south of the current location, 3363 Gillespie Street. Rev. John Dow was called as pastor.

Additional and more user-friendly space was needed, so in 1956 a lot was purchased. It was on Seven Mountain Drive near its intersection with Gillespie Street where the church began to construct a building. Not everything went smoothly. Members first set about to dig a basement for the new building. They watched the construction that was widening US 301 and adding the service roads and wondered what changes this would bring. They did not anticipate one change; one of the new basement walls collapsed and they had to begin anew. Finally, the new building was completed and the congregation moved in.

In 1964, the church reached an agreement with the developers of the Lake Lynn Community to purchase 5 acres of land on Gillespie Street. The agreement included transferring their church building to the developers. In the Fall of 1965, the new sanctuary and children’s wing were dedicated, and the church moved into the new facility.

At the time of the move, the name was changed to Lake Lynn Baptist Mission so the church would receive guidance from the New South River Baptist Association and a sponsoring church. Second Baptist Church was the first sponsoring church; later, Massey Hill Baptist Church served as sponsor. In 1970, the mission was constituted as Lake Lynn Baptist Church. Since that date, the church has added a new wing with a fellowship hall, added new restrooms, purchased additional property which provides for future expansion, added a playground, and a pavilion constructed adjacent to the playground.

Many highlights have taken place over the years. Foremost, among them, is the number of people who have become followers of Jesus Christ because of the faithful ministry of this church. Church records identify those who were baptized here, but countless others became Christians because of selfless mission gifts and mission education through the years.

Several members of the congregation have been participants on short term international mission teams. We praise God for preserving our ministry and pray he will continue as we faithfuly seek to serve Him and build His Kingdom here.
