What If Your Ministry Has Not Been Invented Yet?

Some people are waiting for a ministry position to open. Others may need to consider that God has placed a ministry idea in their heart that does not exist yet.

That can sound intimidating. We may assume a new ministry requires a budget, a committee, a logo, a handbook, and a twelve-month calendar. Sometimes it does. Often it does not.

Jesus may begin something through one person who sees a need and takes a faithful first step.
Ephesians 4 teaches that Christ gives gifts to His people for the building up of the church. Those gifts are not limited to the church’s current organizational chart. The chart can help us organize what we are doing, but it cannot limit what Jesus may want to do through His people.

Maybe you could invite a few people to learn a skill together while talking about faith. Maybe you could organize a monthly neighborhood service project. Maybe you could begin visiting people who cannot attend. Maybe you could start a prayer team, a caregiver support group, a mentoring relationship, or a Bible-reading partnership.

Start small. Do not begin by asking, “How can the whole church do this?” Begin by asking, “Who is one person I can help?”

Then have a conversation with a church leader. Say, “I see a need, and I think I may be able to help. Can we talk about what this could look like?” That is different from telling the church what it should do and walking away. If God has shown you the need, He may also be calling you to help carry the responsibility.

You do not have to get everything perfect. You do need to act wisely, work with others, protect people, and remain faithful to the mission of the church.
Do not get in a pickle. Make a play.
