Tamar: The Woman Who Refused to Be Forgotten
When most people think about the heroes of the Bible, Tamar’s name rarely comes to mind.
Yet she plays a significant role in God’s redemptive story.
Genesis 38 tells the story of a woman who was repeatedly overlooked, ignored, and denied justice. After the death of her husband, Tamar found herself trapped in a culture where widows had very few options.
Judah promised that his youngest son would eventually marry her and provide an heir. But when the time came, Judah broke his promise.
Tamar was left waiting.
- Waiting for justice.
- Waiting for provision.
- Waiting for someone to do what was right.
Many people know what that feels like.
Perhaps you’ve been overlooked at work.
Forgotten by friends.
Ignored by family.
Passed over by people who should have cared.
Tamar’s story reminds us that while people may forget us, God never does.
**Psalm 34:18 (ESV)**
“The Lord is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit.”
God saw Tamar’s situation.
He saw the injustice.
He saw the pain.
He saw the loneliness.
And generations later, God honored her by including her in the genealogy of Jesus.
**Matthew 1:3 (ESV)**
“and Judah the father of Perez and Zerah by Tamar, and Perez the father of Hezron, and Hezron the father of Ram.”
That single phrase speaks volumes.
Women were rarely mentioned in ancient genealogies. Yet Matthew intentionally includes Tamar.
Why?
Because the gospel has always been good news for the overlooked.
Jesus consistently sought out people others ignored:
* tax collectors
* lepers
* widows
* sinners
* outcasts
The kingdom of God has always made room for people the world pushes aside.
If you feel forgotten today, remember Tamar.
God sees what others miss.
God remembers what others forget.
God values people whom society overlooks.
And just as He was writing Tamar into His story, He is still writing yours.
