Why the Talking Donkey Isn’t the Point

The most famous part of Numbers 22 is the talking donkey.

For centuries people have asked:

Did the donkey really speak?

Could animals talk in the Bible?

Why wasn’t Balaam surprised?

Those are interesting questions.

But they are not the questions the text is trying to answer.

The Bible spends very little time explaining the miracle itself. Instead, it focuses on Balaam’s inability to recognize God’s presence.

The irony is striking.

The prophet is blind.
The donkey sees clearly.

The miracle is not designed to make us wonder about animal speech.

It is designed to make us examine our own spiritual perception.

Sometimes modern readers become fascinated with the unusual details while missing the central lesson.

The issue was never the donkey.

The issue was the condition of Balaam’s heart.

That remains the issue for us as well.
