Who Were the Nephilim?

Text: Genesis 6:1–4; Numbers 13:33

Intro
Few Bible topics spark more curiosity than the Nephilim. Scripture calls them “mighty men of old.” What matters most is not the mystery of their identity but the message of their story.

What Christians have believed

  • Fallen angel view: “Sons of God” refers to fallen angels who took human wives and produced hybrid offspring. This draws from ancient Jewish writings like 1 Enoch, which is not part of the biblical canon.

  • Tyrant king view: Nephilim were violent rulers who used power to oppress.

  • Sethite view: “Sons of God” were descendants of Seth who intermarried with the ungodly line of Cain, spreading corruption and leading to the flood.

What matters most

  • Greatness without godliness destroys. The Nephilim became famous for strength and reputation, but their pride revealed a heart far from God.

  • Fear magnifies the enemy. In Numbers 13 the spies said, “We seemed like grasshoppers.” When fear grows, faith shrinks.

Take it to heart
Ask: Am I pursuing recognition more than righteousness? Choose one habit this week that feeds humility and obedience.

Prayer
Father, guard my heart from pride. Make me strong in faith and gentle in spirit. Help me walk in Your ways when the world celebrates something else. Amen.
