What Does the Bible Say About Dragons & Beasts
Our world is full of fascination with the supernatural. From movies and video games to TikTok trends and tarot readings, people are drawn to the idea of having control over unseen forces. It may look harmless on the surface, but Scripture gives us a clear and loving warning: not everything that seems spiritual comes from God.
In Acts 19, we read about the people of Ephesus who practiced magic and sorcery. When they encountered the truth of Jesus, they realized that the power they had been chasing was false. The Bible says they brought all their books of magic together and burned them publicly. They chose truth over illusion, surrendering the counterfeit for the real presence and power of God.
That story reminds us that there are two types of spiritual power. One comes from God, bringing life, peace, and freedom. The other comes from the enemy, offering empty promises that lead to confusion and bondage. The Bible warns us against witchcraft, sorcery, fortune-telling, and anything that invites us to seek power or knowledge apart from God.
It is not because God wants to take the fun out of life. It is because He loves us too much to let us settle for the counterfeit.
The Heart of the Issue
The heart of magic and sorcery is control. It says, “I want power. I want answers. I want to shape my own future.” But faith says, “God, I trust You. You hold my life in Your hands.”
That is the difference between rebellion and relationship. Magic tries to pull power down. Faith lifts our hearts up.
When we chase mystical experiences or rely on horoscopes, crystals, or spells, we are looking for peace in places that cannot give it. True peace comes from surrendering to Jesus, not from trying to manipulate what only He can command.
The Call to Come Home
For the people in Ephesus, coming to faith meant leaving behind their old habits and false hopes. They came home to truth. God invites us to do the same.
Maybe it is not witchcraft or fortune-telling that pulls you away. Maybe it is superstition, fear, or the desire to be in control. The truth is, we all have something that tempts us to trust our own strength more than God’s.
But here’s the good news: Jesus breaks the power of every false promise. He replaces fear with faith, confusion with clarity, and emptiness with joy. The same Spirit who freed the people of Ephesus is still setting people free today.
How We Live This Out
-
Discern what you allow into your life. Entertainment, trends, and even casual “spiritual” practices can shape our hearts.
-
Ask God for wisdom. If something draws your curiosity, take it to Scripture. Test everything by the truth of His Word.
-
Stay close to community. Walk with others who will help you grow, pray with you, and keep you grounded in God’s truth.
When we walk in the light of Jesus, the darkness loses its hold. The power of God’s Word reminds us that we do not need to seek magic, because we already have a miracle—the presence of the Holy Spirit living in us.
The message of the Bible is clear: God’s power is enough.
Reflection Question
What are some things in your life that may compete with your trust in God? How can you turn those areas over to Him this week?
Prayer
Lord, thank You for being my source of truth and power. Help me to recognize anything that draws me away from You. Give me the courage to turn from what is false and the faith to trust You completely. Amen.
